Their life

Saeed Safari was a veteran of football in Ilam, in western Iran, known to those who watched him play as "the German boy" for his style on the pitch. He was forty-nine, and had recently undergone open-heart surgery.

On 9 January 2026 he was shot in the chest with a pellet gun at close range and then beaten with batons by security forces. He fell into a coma and died five days later, on 14 January 2026. His burial at Salehabad cemetery took place under heavy security presence. Officials afterwards offered his family money to say publicly that he had been killed by what the government calls rioters. The family refused.

Salehabad cemetery, Ilam province

Grave · Ilam province (approx.)

Saeed Safari was buried at Salehabad cemetery under a heavy security presence. The place name is ambiguous in the available reporting — more than one Salehabad exists in and around Ilam province — so this record is held at region precision and the point shown is the provincial centre, Ilam. It should be narrowed only against a source that states the cemetery unambiguously.

Burial places are shown only at reduced precision. Families of those killed have been surveilled, summoned, and harassed at gravesides, and several were compelled to bury their dead at night or in another city. The circle on the map marks an area, never a plot.
